How to Plant Cannas and Over Wintering Rhizomes

Plant after the last frost date. No need to dig up if ground doesn't freeze. Here in zone 7a they may or may not return the following year. Before planting, dig hole to a depth of 1 foot, then mix in 2 to 4 inches of compost with soil from hole.(raised bed add topsoil)
Over Wintering Rhizomes for zone 7 or below
1. Use cardboard boxes. You may want to poke small pen size holes in box near the top for some air cirulation. Line bottom of box with newspaper or paper from paper bags so fine medium like peat moss dosen't leak out.
2. Then place each root (rhizome) on top of the medium such as peat moss, vermiculite or sawdust app. 2 inches deep and not touching each other, can also place peat moss on top. Repeat if doing 2 layers.
3. Place closed box in a cool dry location preferably at 40-60 degrees.
4. Check once a month for any roots that may have started to rot and discard them.

Believe this applies to bulbs also (below is from one 4 inch root)
